I, of course, am partial to the Steampunk font. I am dangerously inspired now.

I think that's my favorite one too so far! I can't wait until I'm actually able to start demoing it as a font to see how it looks in usage (especially with a gorgeous, metallic font style effect on it).

What's the process to take a hand drawn idea, digitize it, and then make a font from it? If the answer is too long, you could always make a post from it.

Laura R. Hepworth's avatar

Long 😂. Short version though is, once you have everything finalized on paper, you'd scan it in and then trace the letterforms in a vector program. Once they're turned into vectors, then comes all the extra tricky work of assigning them to letters, kerning, and a bunch of other technical stuff that I don't completely understand yet is the software/coding end of font creation that actually makes them work properly. the difficulty and length of each step in the process though varies considerably depending on what kind of font you're making, if if will include alternate letterforms, ligatures, if it's a variable font, layered font, how many different languages it will support, and a whole host of other features that are possible (especially if you're doing an Open Type Font vs a True Type Font). Sometimes (often) it means working in multiple software too as the font features in a vector program are likely to be limited compared to a dedicated font creation software.

Yeah I figured it was involved. However, if you should get it all done, I'm sure people would like to read about the process.

I’ll definitely be sharing it when I get there. Will probably do a few different posts along the way documenting each major step and then maybe a ‘sum up’ post when it’s all finished and I’ve put the fonts up for sale someplace.

I think they look beautiful! I’ve only casually tried creating my own fonts, just for handwriting, but it’s fun.

Thank you! Font designing is something I've toyed with the idea of for a long time. It just feels like a natural progression of my font addiction 😂.

Those are rad! I love fonts as well. Fun looking at your explorations!

Laura R. Hepworth's avatar

Thank you! I'll be sharing more of my explorations as I go, as well as, my progress on these ones. Fonts are so much fun! I can't wait to have a viable one for testing. Already have a small list of other cover designers and typographers that have graciously volunteered to help me test any fonts I make once I reach that stage.

Good for you! I designed a font for a class in college. It was not good.

I toyed with trying to get into it, but that’s a pool I’m not sure I want to dive deep into

Laura R. Hepworth's avatar

Thank you! Oh, I'm preparing to have a major battle on my hands 😂. I dabbled a little in it years ago and, same, it was horrible. Interesting in its roughness, but absolutely unusable without major, major work to at least get the kerning right and my software at the time (an open source program) was far too crash happy for me to do it. I'm a stubborn redhead though, I'm not giving up! I adore fonts and the thought of being able to create and use my own would be a blast (plus it's useful for others). Still don't have all the software I really need yet, but, in the meantime, I might as well start work on the design phase of it all now so I have something ready to move on to the next steps once I get there and have all the necessary software.

You gotta let yourself be bad, first, especially with something so technical! I look forward to seeing how you progress

Laura R. Hepworth's avatar

Absolutely! I think sometimes we get obsessed with getting things 'right' the first time and forget just how much there is to learn by letting yourself make bad art/design first. Besides, it's fun to look back on and see how far we've really come.

I think they are really cool and creative! Keep it up! I'm keen to read more posts like this!

Thank you! I’ll definitely be sharing more.

If there’s time today - will send a sample with a photo I shot at Ricky’s Flamingo Palace in Turks & Caicos .. what we call a ‘master shot’ for a Scenario - that involves the ‘Social Scene & Beach Volleyball’ - & I’m ‘Writing for Camera & Talent.. i Do Love fun in the sun !

lovin the steampunk ! & bonus ! have an idea for you as well .. are you aware of ‘photo mapping’ ?

i ain’t no illustrator or designer & what I do with photos + text & fonts is sacrilege & somebody should call the cops re my clubwriting as it sure ain’t ‘handwriting .. & the increased crippling of my hands is no excuse either .. can easily send a sample via Notes & tag ya .. But was a post and/or accompanying link here re ‘The San Quentin Project that reminded me of the luxury I had via Richard Cortes a fabulous pal & astonishing hypermedia artist. Would die to have 1% of his talent & generosity .. haha - ‘FONTS y’say !

Most people here seem pretty stubborn about considering or accepting - much less attempting ‘tips, ideas to enhance their respective media from some stranger .. n that’s cool .. but If I was their Client.. uh .. well they .. oh never mind.. Lovin th steampunk .. though my ‘sketch level ‘pirate theming is my current interest & need to attenuate a current ‘Property .. It’s hard to miss within my site - for now I get by via Adobe Express & pretty limited hardware .. my son scooped most of our gear when we shut down our tiny boutique Production Entity & what I kept has ‘aged out

Will post a sample & tag you .. but feel free to do a hit n run at the salamander horde & if you want to hurt yerself laughing enjoy the Track Stars ‘re Foley Film Sound in the hero slot currently .. n thank me later .. no need to Subscribe or whatever .. I rarely even notify anyone re new posts & advise people to decline Notifications anyway - if interested or have time - they know where to find me.. Love the ones Your With .. Gots 96 .. & a fave tune is 96 Tears eh 🦎🏴‍☠️🎬
